Some Background Information on Audio Books

by Laurie Dean Manning

Clive Cussler's publisher is reissuing his earlier works, to which category these novels belong. The production date on the first two tapes is June 96. Here's hoping that Bruce Greenwood will be asked to do more.

I read an interview on the web (an audiobook ordering site) with one of the readers about how the tapes are made. Generally the reader will do a read-thru to get the characterizations and tone of the book. When taping starts, the book is read sequentially during 8-hour sessions (with breaks) over the course of a couple of days (depending on book length). The reader has a director who helps ensure that each character's accent or characterization is maintained thru-out (maybe even reviewing an earlier taped segment). At the beginning of a new day's taping, part of the previous day's read will be repeated to wa.ram up the voice and "get back into" the characters.
