Toronto Star: TV Talkback

January 19, 1991

Question -- I've been a Beach Boys fan all my life and still think about how much I enjoyed the TV-movie about them, Summer Dreams, about six months ago. I'm especially interested in the actor who played Dennis Wilson; he looks very familiar. What else has he done? By the way, did he actually sing some of the Beach Boys' songs or did he fake them?
B.R.D., Toronto

Answer -- Canada's own Bruce Greenwood portrayed singer/songwriter Dennis Wilson in the ABC telefilm Summer Dreams: The Story of The Beach Boys way back in April. The tall, blond actor, now in his mid-30s, was born in Noranda, Que., and grew up in the U.S. and Switzerland before his family settled in Vancouver, B.C. His much-travelled father, now retired, was one of Canada's top geophysicists and is the former chairman of the geology department at the University of British Columbia. Greenwood's lengthy professional credits include starring in the NBC series Legmen (1984) and a season as Dr. Seth Griffin on St. Elsewhere (1986); he has also appeared (nude) in a handful of controversial features, including Mickey Rourke's Wild Orchid. Though Greenwood -- a former singer in a club band -- lipsynced most of the songs in Summer Dreams, he actually sang the number You Are So Beautiful on the sound track.

Errors:

A nice biography and one that paid proper respect to his Dad. There are two errors, however:

  • He lived in Switzerland AFTER his teen years in Vancouver.
  • He spent TWO seasons on St. Elsewhere (1986-1988).
