Saga kicks off busy schedule
by Harvey Solomon
With so many TV movies filming in Canada these days, actors are quite accustomed to trekking north. For former "St. Elsewhere" star Bruce Greenwood, that's like going home, since the Quebec native grew up mostly in Vancouver and still owns a house there.
And the locale wasn't the only attraction for "Heart of a Child" (airing Monday on NBC). Director Sandor Stern and co-star Michelle Greene ("LA Law") are old friends.
"The surroundings and the situation and the people involved made it really conducive to doing good work," said Greenwood. "For this kind of material, where you have to dig a little bit, Sandy is really sensitive and understands how to help an actor arrive at those places. And to make an authentic couple, it's that much easier if you know the person you're working with."
Based on a true story, "Heart of a Child" features Greenwood and Greene as a young couple who discover their daughter will be born missing part of her brain. They make the wrenching decision to donate the baby's heart to a newborn boy with a terminal heart condition.
"Heart of a Child" also features Ann Jillian as the mother of the boy who became the youngest heart transplant recipient in medical history. This film is the first in a string of projects for Greenwood. Next will be "Double Cross, a USA Network film co-starring Virginia Madsen and airing in July, in which he plays a disgruntled ex-cop who sets up his ex-wife to take the fall for a bank heist. Then he plays opposite Lisa Hartman Black, Dixie Carter and Linda Evans in Judith Krantz's "Dazzle," a CBS miniseries.
Plus, he's completed two feature films -- "Exotica," premiering at this year's Cannes Film Festival, and "Paint Cans," which will debut at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
"It's really weird the way it's backed up," he said. "I guess it'll burst onto the scene sometime this year all at once and it'll seem that I'm everywhere and then suddenly I'll disappear again.
"I've been really fortunate, and if I can continue to do that I'll be a happy guy. The only thing I need is some spare time to take a cooking course and some music courses."
Music, in fact, is Greenwood's "complete addiction." He takes a guitar whenever he travels, and wedges writing and recording into his spare time. He's got several songwriting credits, too. "I get those checks from BMI for $2.40 for 300 playings of "The Man Who Ran Away With the Moon,'" he said. "It doesn't make me rich but it's A ton of fun."
"Heart of a Child" airs Monday at 9 p.m. on Channel 4.
