The Ordinary Hollywood Star

Bruce Greenwood is possibly one of the busiest Canadian actors--but he is also one of the least recognized. "It's my off-the-shelf face," jokes the 43-year-old who grew up in Vancouver. Besides starring in Atom Egoyan's Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter, Greenwood has been a staple in television movies and series.

But it was his role as a grieving father in The Sweet Hereafter that made Hollywood take notice of his big-screen style. Now, Greenwood has his highest-profile role yet in the big-budget film Double Jeopardy, co-starring Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd. Greenwood shines as a double-dealing husband who frames his wife for his murder.

"The guy is a complete scumbag," he says, adding with a smile, "I just based it on a couple of guys that I have done business with."

Greenwood hadn't considered a career in acting until he took a couple of drama classes at the University of British Columbia "as easy credits." He quickly became hooked and took to the stage. Between local theatre gigs, he would make ends meet with "straight jobs," such as collecting scrap metal. In 1985, he and his wife, Susan, moved to Los Angeles and Greenwood started getting regular TV parts. He is currently shooting his most challenging film role as President Kennedy in the thriller 13 Days, based on the Cuban missile crisis. "I'm still working," says Greenwood, "on getting the accent right."
