GOLDEN SATELLITE AWARDS

Accepting his award

January 14, 2001

Bruce Greenwood attended the Golden Satellite Award presentations, where he was nominated -- and won -- for "Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role / Drama" for his role as President John F. Kennedy in Thirteen Days. The awards, which took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel, are organized by the International Press Academy, a splinter group from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., the group behind the Golden Globes. Additional information on the award can be found on the Golden Satellite link within the Thirteen Days directory.

Although the show was not televised nationally, it was covered by the trades and a Santa Barbara based program called "Faces & Names", whose interview with Bruce and broadcast of the ceremony are reproduced in part here. Faces & Names features a Russian interviewer named Agata Gotova, a fact Bruce obviously found quite interesting:

Hugging Agata A two-sided view of Bruce's interview A fascinated Bruce

AG:Thank you, thank you. You're nominated today for Thirteen Days...
BG:Yeah, yeah. For Thirteen Days, yeah.
AG:And I haven't see the movie yet. Could you tell me about it.
BG:Well, it just came out on Friday, but it's of...it's of particular interest to Russians and Americans, because it tells the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis....

Thirteen Days film clip

BG:So it's that 14 days - 13 days, really - when Kruschev put missiles in Cuba and Kennedy and Robert Kennedy and other associates had to figure out a way to encourage the Russians to pack up...
AG:Isn't it interesting that official cold war is over, but films about Soviet Union and United States cirsis continue to come out?
BG:Yeah, yeah........The Cold War may be over but I think diplomacy is required more than ever. And the lessons we can learn from the stories of the cold war are lessons in diplomacy. And that's sorely needed, you know?

It's of particular interest to Russians and Americans Lessens in diplomacy The Cold War may be over....

Bruce's Acceptance Speech

(In tiny voice) Oooh cool, it's for me....That's great. I guess I should thank the International Press Academy. Thank you very much. And Kevin Costner, first of all, for taking a chance with me. And having the guts to make a story like this. It's really an ensemble piece and because he wanted to tell this story......(fade out).
