When the Variety Club Telethon shattered all its previous fundraising records Sunday night, dozens of disabled tots were on hand to celebrate, including Jamie Leonardo.
Celebrities, volunteers, hosts, parents and handicapped children sang a rousing rendition of the song All God's Children, after learning that B.C. residents donated $2,974,229 to the Variety Club's 22nd annual telethon at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
Broadcast over 22 hours of live continuous coverage, the teletho will help pay for the Variety Club's renovation, expansion and creation projects - treatment facilities for kids with special needs, said Telethon chairman George Pitman.
Popular television weatherman Norm Grohmann, once again hosted the telethon, and he got support from a lineup of entertainers including music legend Ray Charles, St. Elsewhere actor Bruce Greenwood, The Nylons and Bobby Curtola. Making his 17th consecutive appearance on the telethon was Bob McGrath, the host of Sesame Street.
