(Made for television movie; originally aired 4/13/93 on CBS)
Bruce Greenwood plays Nick Terrio, an attractive but dangerous young man, who is rescued from a drifting ship along with his homicidal wife Eliza (played with chilling believability by Kelly Rowan). Kate Jackson and Canadian actor Kenneth Welsh (an old acquaintance of Greenwood's from The Climb and Woman on the Run) play the wealthy older couple who bring them aboard their own boat only to realize the younger couple have perilous plans to take over their ship and assume their lives. Although the plot is the same as the motion picture Dead Calm with a somewhat predictable ending, the film is remakably well acted with complex charaterizations and effective suspense. It has specific rewards for Greenwood fans, too: a fascinating (if underdeveloped) subplot of Eliza's control over Nick through his claustrophobic abuse as a child in the orphanage where they were both raised, and an attraction between him and the older woman, which is used to complicate the more straightforward agenda of the other two players. Although he's a decided villain, this was one of Greenwood's favorite roles. His blond good looks and amiable personality are handsomely displayed, and there was some intriguing chemistry
between him and Kelly Rowan.
