(2004 British / Canadian independent film)
B ruce Greenwood co-stars as Julia's
oldest friend and confidante, Lord Charles, in this important independent film
for Sony Pictures Classics that began principle filming under the direction of
Istvan Szabo on June 16, 2003 in Budapest.
Annette Bening stars as Julia Lambert, a beautiful but aging British stage actress who tires of her husband's constant philandering
and decides to take on a new lover, one half her age! When she discovers her young paramour is more insincere than her husband, she plots
a sweet revenge.
A tale of "folly and revenge", the movie is set in the London
theatre world of the 1930s. North Americans Bening and Greenwood play English aristocrats,
while British actors Shaun Evans and Jeremy Irons play Bening's American lover
and wayward husband. Lucy Punch co-stars as an upstart actress who
becomes involved with both men.
Bruce Greenwood's role is small but significant and he has several key scenes with Julia, played in a bravura performance by Bening, who won both The National Film Board of Review Award and the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, and she is currently a front runner for the Oscar. Greenwood was awarded a runner-up award for his subtle but multi-leveled supporting role by the Vancouver Film Critics.
Produced by Robert Lantos for Serendipity
Point Films jointly with Myriad Pictures of London, the project was written by Robert Harwood (who won a 2002 Oscar for The Pianist) based on the novel "Theatre" by Somerset Maugham. Sony Pictures Classic will distribute the film internationally.
Bruce Greenwood
filmed his scenes in Budapest, jetting back and forth to Vancouver where he was shooting I
Robot that same summer.
