(2002 independent film)
A psychological thriller set aboard a submarine during World War II, Bruce Greenwood plays Lt. Brice, the commander of an American sub sent to pick up three survivors from a British hospital ship sunk by Nazis. The questionable death of the sub's captain just days before the mission undermines Brice's authority, which is quickly challenged by the rescued nurse (Olivia Williams) as well. Under claustrophobic conditions Brice's mind begins to unravel as he must deal with a pursuing Nazi destroyer, an ever-decreasing oxygen supply, possible supernatural forces and his own guilty conscience. A brilliantly complex portrayal for Greenwood, the film was directed by David Twohy from a script by Darren Aronofsky and Lucas Sussman for Dimension Films. a subdivision of the powerful independent film company, Miramax. It was filmed in London during the rainy Spring of 2001 with location shooting aboard the U.S.S. Silversides in Muskegon, MI the last week of June.
Originally titled "Proteus," the project was first slated to be helmed by Aronofsky, whose low-budgeted, high-concept first film, PI, took the Director's Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival and led to his inclusion in Entertainment Weekly's "It" list of 1998. Miramax's genre arm, Dimension Films, hired Aronofsky to direct "Proteus," but Twohy joined in May, 2000 and writing/directing jobs shifted with Aronofsky also assuming Executive Producer responsibilities. Greenwood was offered and took the role amid a flurry of publicity, as it was his first assignment after the huge surge of publicity surrounding Thirteen Days.
Though reviews were generally positive, Dimension decided on an uncommonly low profiled release for the movie, which came out on October 11th, 2002 in limited runs around Los Angeles and New York. The DVD - with many extras including a commentary with Twohy and all the major actors - was released in July, 2003.
