Capote
DVD Extras

There are some nice DVD extras on the released film, but very few cover Bruce or his performance. There is a still shot of him as Jack in "The Making of Capote, pt 1" (along with comments about how excellent the supporting actors are) and some comments about the scene where Jack and Truman are walking in a park in "The Making of Capote, pt 2" - comments that mainly concern how cold it was and how it snowed the moment that scene was completed.

There are two commentaries, however, and the one with director Bennett Miller and leading actor Philip Seymour-Hoffman does touch a bit on Bruce's performance:

Scene with Bruce on the telephone with Capote as he boasts about his work on the book:

PS-H: Bruce - This is one of my - I love how Bruce just takes it in. How he listens.

BM: Bragging to his boyfriend. There's a separateness of the two men

PS-H: Bruce Greenwood's very open to the closeness these two could have

Second scene of Bruce on the phone where Truman needles him about Harper Lee's new book:

BM: This is Bruce - this is one of my favorite scenes that Bruce does actually, because you can see all the envy, jealousy, competition, everything that goes on between artists. When he goes, 'She's got a book, a successful book, and I don't.' Beautiful, beautiful, what he does here....

PS-H: And Truman plays into it, ribs him about it and realizes he's hurt him and wants to make up to him. Classic Capote.

Scene of Truman and Jack walking in the park:

BM: This is the scene before it snowed - This is the last exterior shot we did in Winnipeg and - without exaggeration - after we called "cut" on the final take it began to snow - immediately! - big, fat snowflakes. An hour later one inch of snow was on the ground.

PS-H: What I like about Bruce is that Bruce is almost as hard on himself as I was.

BM: Bruce's first day before this was the phone call, and he was humbled by it, and he hated me! And he showed up and had a little confrontation and became vulnerable, sort of the weaker. Because he's very alpha. He kind of exposed himself, and I said, "Bruce, you're right there to do the scene...."

Scenes in Costa Brava, Spain:

PS-H: Speaking of the devil [Bruce as Jack].

BM: We shot that in Malibu - we weren't sure we'd be able to go to Malibu.

PS-H: But this was a gift. They did give us these two days at the end of the shoot and they were bright and blue and not a cloud in the sky.

Scene in Costa Brava at the outside table:

BM: This scene - there was a scene before this that was very affectionate - dancing and make-out session for you and Bruce, which ended up getting cut.. for two reasons. It's the only scene that Gerald Clarke commented on and what did he say?

PS-H: Public shows of affection weren't big between them, and because Harper was there he didn't buy it.

BM: It's the one thing that stood out. Also, it kind of messed with the rhythm.

PS-H: But he was very adament about that - that public shows of affection - that's just not how they functioned.

BM: And the relationship had gone on for some time by then, and it got more and more platonic. Also, for the film, it showed Truman was the recipient of no public affection.

Connected scene where they say good-bye to Harper by her car:

PS-H: And the looks passing between Jack and Harper. Are we going to let this guy sink?

BM: Yes, they know what's going on....
