'The Core' Begins Filming
Jon Amiel Directs A Stellar Cast that Includes Aaron Eckhart,
Oscar-winner Hillary Swank, Delroy Lindo, Stanley Tucci, D.J.
Qualls, Tcheky Karyo, Richard Jenkins, Bruce Greenwood and Alfre
Woodard
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Principal photography has
begun on "The Core,'' an original science fiction thriller directed
by Jon Amiel. "The Core'' is a David Foster/Horsepower Entertainment
Production, A Jon Amiel Film for Paramount Pictures, and stars Aaron
Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Delroy Lindo, Stanley Tucci, D.J. Qualls,
Tcheky Karyo, Richard Jenkins, Bruce Greenwood and Alfre Woodard.
Produced by David Foster, Sean Bailey, Cooper Layne and co-produced
by David Householter. The screenplay was written by Cooper Layne and
John Rogers.
Geophysicist Dr. Josh Keyes (Eckhart, "Erin Brockovich'') discovers
that an unknown force has caused the earth's inner core to stop
rotating. With the planet's magnetic field rapidly deteriorating,
our atmosphere literally starts to come apart at the seams with
catastrophic consequences. To resolve the crisis, Keyes, along with
a team of the world's most gifted scientists, travel into the earth's
core in a subterranean craft piloted by "terranauts,'' Major Rebecca
"Beck'' Childs (Swank, "Boys Don't Cry'') and Colonel Robert Iverson
(Greenwood, "Thirteen Days''). Their mission: detonate a device that
will reactivate the core.
"'The Core' is particularly unique in that it is not an outer space
movie it's an inner space movie,'' says director Jon Amiel. "There
are no 'bad guys' and no conspiracies -- just a wildly disparate
group of individuals brought together by a powerful common cause --
the redemption of our planet.''
Producer David Foster adds that the film is about pulling resources
together to achieve a very impossible goal. "For decades, audiences
have enjoyed outer space movies,'' says Foster. "'The Core' takes a
180 degree turn and deals with the inner earth. Hopefully, this will
start a new trend.''

Par pulls 'Core" trailer after shuttle disaster
Paramount has pulled its trailer for "The Core" which shows the space shuttle in jeopardy, but the studio is holding to its March 28 release date for the sci-fi thriller.
Par asked exhibs to stop screening the trailer following Saturday's space shuttle Columbia disaster and it is reviewing its advertising to make certain the campaign is sensitive to the tragedy.
The studio also said it's premature to decide whether to alter or excise Shuttle sequences from the film.
Paramount decided in the fall to delay release of "The Core" from November in order to give more time to complete f/x shots. Helmed by Jon Amiel, pic revolves around a group of NASA "terranauts" who must travel deep underground after the Earth's inner core stops rotating, which creates a host of natural disasters that threaten life on the surface.
