The Core
DVD Extras
Iverson argues with his crew

Although there are several nice extras on the DVD for The Core, none of them are particularly rewarding for Bruce Greenwood fans. There are no interviews, biographies or filmographies for any of the cast and though Hilary Swank, Aaron Eckhart and D.J. Squalls are interviewed in the short featurette "To the Core and Back, the Making of The Core", the rest the cast is only seen incidentally. There are 10 deleted and expanded scenes and Greenwood can be seen in three of them.

A shortened version of this scene made the finished film; in the longer version the astronauts adjust each other's suits, then come to Zimsky's rescue when Brazleton sets him on fire to prove the spacesuits work. Iverson is both irritated and amused.

Iverson and Childs agreeBob Iverson and Beck Childs
Iverson's best deleted scene is the one in which the crew is told they have to step up plans to launch; Iverson is adamant that the crew isn't ready. In the squabbling that ensues Beck Childs sides with Iverson but Josh's opinion prevails -- that they're as ready as they'll ever be.

Jon Amiel's Commentary

Jon Amiel speaks generously of Bruce Greenwood's talent. In the scene where Hilary Swank and Bruce Greenwood are introduced he explains how they give Hilary a star's moment. When Bruce Greenwood appears, he laughs and says, "And the truly wonderful Bruce Greenwood comes in feet first in our movie."

In the scene where Robert Iverson and Rebecca Childs meet their crew, Amiel comments: "Bruce Greenwood's expression here tells us everything we need to know about his impression of the crew."

In that same scene, Iverson passes by Josh and makes an aside about his tie. Amiel comments: "Again, when you've got really fine actors, the best thing you can probably do is let them play it out. Let really fine actors do what they do best."

During the scene where Iverson dryly says to Zimsky, "My best guess is you don't know," Amiel says "In these scenes of interaction between the actors there's genuine spontaneity. This wasn't scripted and it wasn't rehearsed."

During the simulator scene Amiel comments: "And the actors were really getting shaken around here. They were not happy when it took 10 takes for this sequence."

In Bruce Greenwood's best scene - where Iverson tells Beck why she's not ready for leadership, Amiel comments: "Since this is one of my very, very favorite dialogue scenes, I'll just let you listen to it. It's beautifully played by both actors."

And as Bruce Greenwood's Iverson dies, Amiel says: "And that's the only blood you see in this film. Bruce Greenwood disappearing into the lava was done on a green screen and he's falling back onto a mattress."
