Corbet St. James V

(made-for-tv movie; originally aired 4/3/87 on ABC)

Bruce Greenwood starred in this Stephen Cannell pilot even before he joined the cast of St. Elsewhere, but its broadcast date was held back about a year so that it ended up airing during his first season. He plays Corbet St. James V (nicknamed both Corey and Cinco), a prodigal son who returns home, only to find himself suspected of his billionaire father's murder. Set up as a series with a fugitive premise, much of the pilot establishes Cinco's bygone relationship with his dead brother and estranged father along with his efforts to uncover the actual murderer. Rip Torn plays his brutish father and Joe Pantoliano the detective who wants to frame him. There's also a loosely linked subplot involving Corinne Bohrer as an abused young wife who becomes Cinco's alibi and love interest. Intended as the pilot for a series, when the series wasn't sold it ended up being broadcast as a made-for-tv movie. As such, its a mish-mash of a film but remains extremely good Greenwood, using much of the underdog charm that served him well in later years.

An obscure title, it's not available on video in America and hasn't been repeated on television for many years. Directed by Corey Allen.
