LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The crime melodrama "Double Jeopardy'' enjoyed a sizzling No. 1 debut at the weekend box office, while Robin Williams' new Holocaust comedy "Jakob the Liar'' flopped miserably.

Box office goes Judd, thud

Variety

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Marketplace competition posed no peril to Paramount newcomer ``Double Jeopardy,'' which handily led the weekend box office with an estimated $23.7 million. The weekend also saw excellent results for DreamWorks' first wave expansion of ``American Beauty.'' So much for the good news.

The span's flip side included an underwhelming response to the national launches of Columbia's ``Jakob the Liar'' and Touchstone's ``Mumford.''

``Double Jeopardy,'' the Ashley Judd-Tommy Lee Jones thriller, went out in 2,547 theaters and returned with a hefty per-playdate average of $9,310.

``It's sort of an unconventional film for women,'' said ``Double Jeopardy'' producer Leonard Goldberg. ``Ashley has the kind of role you associate with men. And the women in the audience really connect to this feisty character and get very emotionally involved. We knew from the buzz that the picture would do well, but the response has truly exceeded our expectations.''

1. Double Jeopardy, $23.7 million
2. Blue Streak, $13.2 million
3. The Sixth Sense, $8.5 million
4. For Love of the Game, $6.6 million
5. American Beauty, $6.0 million

'Jeopardy' a safe bet for No. 1 among the over-35s

Hollywood Reporter
Tues., Sept. 28, 1999
By Roger Cels

Moviegoers played "Double Jeopardy" during the weekend, making it the No. 1 film by a wide margin and propelling the marketplace as a whole to another successful session.

Paramount's "Double Jeopardy" debuted to $23.2 million, a performance that met or exceeded most prerelease prognostications.

The Ashley Judd-Tommy Lee Jones drama drew a 90% favorable reaction from moviegoers in surveys conducted Friday night by CinemaScore, suggesting that word-of-mouth should support sales going forward. The movie's demographic profile was not as constructive, however, with nearly two-thirds of the opening-night audience in the over-age-35 camp. While the elements in "Double Jeopardy" were expected to attract more-mature moviegoers, the relative absence of interest among the important younger segment could prove nettlesome.

''Jeopardy'' trumps ``Hearts'' at box office

Variety
Sunday October 10 11:00 PM ET
By Leonard Klady

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Paramount's thriller ``Double Jeopardy'' edging out Columbia's romancer ``Random Hearts'' for the top spot at the weekend box office. ``Jeopardy'' earned $13.6 million in its third weekend, and ``Hearts'' arrived in theaters with a studio estimated $13.1 million.

``Jeopardy'' continued to hold exceedingly well, dipping just 20% in its third foray. The revenge tale was still buoyant with a $4,650 average at 2,913 courtrooms. With a 17-day haul of $65.8 million, the Ashley Judd-Tommy Lee Jones starrer looks likely to hit $100 million.

Director Sydney Pollack's ``Hearts,'' starring Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas, played to the hankie crowd, which has been underserved of late. It held a slight lead Friday, but its 31% B.O. bump on Saturday wasn't enough to sidestep ``Jeopardy.'' At least initially, its older audience seemed undeterred by underwhelming reviews, ringing up a $4,860 per-theater average. The picture bowed at 2,697 playdates.

In its second weekend, Warner Bros.' action-adventure ``Three Kings'' ranked third with an $11.7 million take, and the unusual combo of pyro thrills and political commentary was off only 26% from its opening weekend. The wartime saga averaged $3,980 on 2,942 battlefronts and has grossed $32.4 million in 10 days.

Rising 2% from last weekend, the three-dayu period was up 21% from last year's comparable holiday period; the Columbus Day long weekend should generate roughly $92 million. The year-to-date haul reached $5.82 billion, 8% better than the pace established one year ago.

Revenge pulls moviegoers to 'Jeopardy'

New York Daily News / L.A. Times
10/13/99
by Lewis Beale

The drawing power of feminine revenge has catapulted "Double Jeopardy" to box-office success despite critics/ yawns.

The Ashley Judd-Tommy Lee Jones film, about a paroled woman who finds she can get away with killing the abusive husband who framed her and get her son back, was No. 1 at the box office for the third straight week. Some Hollywood insiders now opine that the Bruce Beresford-helmed "Double Jeopardy" is headed for a gross of more than $100 million.

"What Paramount succeeded in doing marketing 'Double Jeopardy' was create for the moviegoing audience the easily understandable concept that this woman could kill her husband and get away with it for legal reasons," says the Hollywood Reporter's Martin Grove. "It's a concept that a lot of women are attracted to."

"Double Jeopardy" opened to lukewarm reviews and had to compete against such highly touted films as "Three Kings," starring George Clooney, and "Random Hearts" featuring mega-star Harrison Ford. But like "The Sixth Sense," another sleeper that has attracted major business, "Double Jeopardy" has managed to blow away the competition.

Paul Dergarabedian of Exhibitor Relations says a key factor to "Double Jeopardy's" success is intelligent casting.

"Men and women are both enjoying this movie," he says. "Men are used to seeing Tommy Lee Jones in movies where he's a tracker, a tough character. Tommy Lee says to men, 'This is not just a chick flick.' And then Ashley Judd says to the women, 'I'm a force to be reckoned with, not just a weak character.' It's a great combination."

Grove goes even further, stating that the Judd character's quest for revenge and for her son resonates with women.

"Women identify with this woman who starts out as a typical housewife, powerless, her husband's playtoy," he says, "then, suddenly, the situation is reversed and she becomes an action hero. She goes from becoming passive to active. It's a kind of wish fulfillment, a participatory attraction."

'Double Jeopardy' Wins Box Office Race Again

Sunday October 17 2:42 PM ET
By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In the battle for box office supremacy between the street brawlers of ``Fight Club'' and the warring couple in ``The Story of Us,'' North American moviegoers apparently opted for neither.

Instead, Paramount Pictures' surprise Ashley Judd hit ''Double Jeopardy'' won a very tight contest to enjoy its fourth consecutive weekend at No. 1 with a three-day haul of $10.5 million, according to studio estimates issued Sunday.

``The Story of Us'' (Universal), a romantic comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Bruce Willis as a couple whose 15-year marriage is falling apart, opened at No. 2 with $10.4 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period. ``Fight Club'' (Fox), a grim drama in which Edward Norton and Brad Pitt play underground pugilists, weighed in at $10.3 million in its first weekend.

The rankings could change when final data are released Monday, especially since Universal and Fox were each claiming that their movies were No. 1. Not surprisingly, older females dominated audiences for ``Story,'' while young males grabbed the ringside seats for ``Seven'' director David Fincher's ``Fight Club.''

``Double Jeopardy'' has $80.6 million after 24 days, ``Three Kings'' $43.7 million after 17 days and ``American Beauty'' $41.4 million after 33 days (10 of them in wide release).

1. Double Jeopardy $10.5 million
2. The Story of Us $10.4 million
3. Fight Story $10.3 million
4. The Three Kings $7.3 million
5. American Beauty $6.8 million
6. Random Hearts $5.8 million
7. Superstar $5.7 million
8. The Sixth Sense $5.2 million
9. Blue Streak $3.8 million
10.The Omega Code $2.4 million

'Fight' Gets Clobbered
"Jeopardy" edges Pitt pic, "Us" for 4th straight B.O. victory

Variety
Monday October 18, 1999
By Dade Hayes

A new fight club formed over the weekend -- and Brad Pitt's not a member.

Rather, the combatants were Paramount, Universal and Fox, whose pics battled nearly to a B.O. draw. Winner by decision and still heavyweight champion: Par's surprising "Doble Jeopardy," which execs say raked in $10.5 million in its fourth week.

"Fight Club" KOs "Double Jeopardy"!

Variety / Reuters
Monday October 18 05:29 PM EDT

First rule of the weekend box office: Don't talk about the weekend box office.

Especially when the battle is just too close to call.

The race to declare a winner in last weekend's ticket-sales bonanza led box-office watchers on Sunday to crown Double Jeopardy a quadruple-repeat winner. But when the dust settled today it was Brad Pitt's Fight Club that had won the bout.

The ultra-violent pugilistic pic KOd Ashley Judd's avenging-woman flick, $11 million to $10.2 million, according to final numbers from Exhibitor Relations Inc.

Thus ends Double Jeopardy's surprising reign at No. 1 at three weeks. While knocked down to No. 2, the film is still well on its way to $100 million, with some $80 million already in the bank.

The film that fared the worst in the revised tally was The Story of Us. The marital-minded romance starring Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer originally was credited, per studio estimates, with a No. 2 finish and a $10.4 million take. But in reality, the film debuted at No. 3 with $9.6 million--a tepid figure considering its two name-above-the-title stars.

Ironically, it was Universal, the studio behind The Story of Us, that challenged Paramount's claims to No. 1 (again) with Double Jeopardy. Fox--the Fight Club camp--also cried foul, albeit with just cause, as it turned out.

"You never know why something like this happens," says Paul Dergarabedian of Exhibitor Relations. "...It's a nail-biter for everyone concerned because everyone wants to be No. 1."

Per the estimates released Sunday, the three films stacked up this way: 1. Double Jeopardy ($10.5 million); 2. The Story of Us ($10.4 million); 3. Fight Club ($10.3 million).

Of the trio, the controversial Fight Club scored the best per-screen average ($5,247) while playing at nearly 1,000 fewer sites than Double Jeopardy and about 200 fewer than the marital-minded The Story of Us.

Here's how the Top 10 stacked up, according to estimates from Exhibitor Relations Inc.:

1. Fight Club $11 million
2. Double Jeopardy, $10.2 million
3. The Story of Us, $9.6 million
4.Three Kings, $7.3 million
5.American Beauty, $6.8 million
6.Random Hearts, $5.8 million
7.Superstar, $5.7 million
8.The Sixth Sense, $5.2 million
9.Blue Streak, $3.8 million
10.The Omega Code, $2.3 million

Sunday Punch Gives 'Fight Club' B.O. KO

Daily Variety
Tuesday October 19, 1999
By Dade Hayes

Fox's "Fight Club," on the ropes after Sunday's B.O. estimates, managed a final-round TKO based on Monday's official figures.

Originally ranked No. 3, pic climbed to the top spot with an $11 million weekend, well ahead of the $10.3 million estimate. The tally was still weaker than expected, but it gave Fox hope for the Brad Pitt starrer.

Par's "Double Jeopardy," the B.O. champ for three straight weeks, claimed a fourth crown Sunday. In fact, it finished No. 2 with $10.2 million.

Pic has already been a surprise winner, with a cume of $80.3 million. Its weekend gross fell just 24% from the prior frame.

Some distrib vets say aggressive estimates are par for the course. But Robert Friedman, vice-chairman of Paramount Motion Picture Group, dismissed talk that the studio was fixated on a fourth straight B.O. win.

"This was clearly not a reach number for us, if you look at what the film has done," he said. "I don't know what all the hubbub is about."

As the data showed, "Double Jeopardy" missed the studio estimate by less than $300,000, a tiny fraction of the total.

'Best Man' Grabs Brass Ring At Box Office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - ``The Best Man'' caught the bouquet at the North American box office, jumping past four other new releases to open in the No. 1 spot at the weekend.

According to studio estimates issued Sunday, Universal Pictures' black ensemble romantic comedy earned about $9.1 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period, becoming the first movie since ``Forces of Nature'' in March to top the list with under $10 million.

Ashley Judd's ``Double Jeopardy'' (Paramount), the big surprise hit of the fall, remained at No. 2 for a second week with $7.7 million. Brad Pitt's ``Fight Club'' (Fox), declared last weekend's champ when final figures were released Monday, slipped to No. 3 in its second round with $6.3 million.

Director Martin Scorsese's ``Bringing out the Dead'' (Paramount), a black comedy starring Nicolas Cage as a New York paramedic on the verge of a breakdown, opened at No. 4 with $6.2 million. Universal's ``The Story of Us,'' a poignant romantic comedy starring Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer, slipped two places to No. 5 in its second weekend with $5.5 million.
