(1999 feature film / released 9/24/99)
Bruce Greenwood plays the pivotal role of Nick Parsons, Ashley Judd's errant husband, in this "twisty" suspense tale from Paramount helmed by the award-winning Australian director Bruce Beresford, whose credits had previously included such stellar offerings as Driving Miss Daisy, Tender Mercies, Crimes of the Heart and Breaker Morant. The story centers on Libby Parsons (Judd) whose "perfect marriage" is violently interrupted when her affluent husband is killed aboard their hired yacht. Convicted for his murder, she spends six years in prison before breaking away from her parole officer (top-billed Tommy Lee Jones) to search for her kidnapped son and seek revenge on the husband who framed her. Annabeth Gish co-stars as her closest confidante and Nick's accomplice.
A huge financial success for Paramount, the film has become a significant landmark in Greenwood's career and vaulted Judd to movie star status. Early reports barely mentioned him, as his re-emergence in the last half hour of the film as New Orleans businessman Jonathan Devereaux was to be a surprise ending. However, trailers for the movie erased all mystery, and only the film's incredible box office quieted critics of the tell-all trailer, among them the director and Greenwood himself. Shot mostly in Vancouver with key scenes on location in New Orleans, Bruce Greenwood's casting was headline news in Variety. The significance of the film for him can hardly be overstated, as it still stands as his most famous, lucrative and widely known starring role.
The video and DVD (with a behind-the-scenes featurette which includes an interview with Greenwood) are widely available and - like the movie - have been a financial success for Paramount.
