(2000 direct-to-video film)
Bruce Greenwood is cast as Jack White, Daryl Hannah's distraught husband, in this high camp thriller shot in Winnipeg, Canada under the title Cord. Hannah plays Ann White, a pregnant woman kidnapped by a crazed couple (the truly bizarre Jennifer Tilly and Vincent Gallo), who have plans to steal her unborn child. Although they convince authorities the young woman is dead, her husband refuses to accept their hypothesis and stubbornly pursues her. Although the plot is tightly detailed and much of the explicit violence serves the film's over-the-top black humor, there's an abundance of blood here -- much of it centered on the very pregnant Ann, so the film will not suit all tastes. There's one scene in which Tilly boils up one of her victims on the stove, which is actually very funny but will definitely not amuse everybody. It certainly sets the audience up for Greenwood's encounter with her, which comes soon afterward. We're terrified for him!
Greenwood's part is quite good, in fact, as his story line is offered as relief from the craziness Hannah is experiencing in the couple's remote snowbound home. There's even a subplot for him, as a "good" friend of Ann's pursues a very reluctant Jack. There are some surprizingly artistic moments in the film as well, as the cinematographer used the snowy landscape to impressive advantage, especially effective in the scene where Jack discovers the house where Ann's being held. But be forewarned that Greenwood's encounter with Tilly is as bloody as all the others. Two endings were filmed: one in which Jack dies and the other in which his bloody remains barely survive. Greenwood himself preferred the one not used.
A project of director Sidney J. Furie and producer Gary Howsam for Blue Rider Pictures, the adventure was written by Yas Takata and Joel Hladecek and was originally titled Tripwire. It was picked up by Trimark Films in late 1999, who changed both the movie's title and the distribution plans, releasing it as a direct-to-video on May 23rd, 2000.
