The Hitchhiker: Shattered Vows
|
The pilot episode for an HBO cable series that later became extremely
popular, this was Bruce Greenwood's first significant screen role. He
starred as Jeff Boder, a penniless but attractive young water skiier who marries a
wealthy older woman only to succumb rather too readily to the charms of her
sexy stepdaughter. At the wedding he realizes the bridal statuette his
Grandmother has given him has mysterious powers that directly effect the human
bride and groom. Using it to eliminate his new wife, he brings about his own
destiny as well. Young, blond and handsome, this is a fascinating early peek at Greenwood in a short little piece that's full of history. Of added interest, it was even filmed in his home town of Vancouver. There are some intimate love scenes with explicit nudity which have been edited out of most versions for syndication. Oddly enough the original hitchhiker (almost incidental to each story) was
Nicholas Campbell, but he's also edited out of the syndicated version and
the more familiar Page Fletcher is comfortably pasted on top of the story. The entire Hitchhiker series is repeated frequently in syndication, but the original versions are much harder to find.
