The Little Kidnappers

Dr. Willem Hooft

(1990 made-for-cable Disney movie; originally aired 8/17/90)

An extremely attractive role for Bruce Greenwood, he plays Dr. Willem Hooft, the quietly commanding Dutch doctor in a 1903 Canadian community of Scotsmen where many resent him because of the recently fought Boer War. Two precocious English children play the lead roles of the orphaned kidnappers with Charlton Heston top billed as their stern Scottish grandfather. He is also Dr. Hooft's main protagonist as the father of the young woman he loves, appealingly played by Leah Pinsent. Greenwood was nominated for a Gemini Award for this performance, which is quite different from anything else he's done. He uses an accurate Dutch accent throughout, easily immersing himself into the gentle strength of his character. The director is the same man who helmed one of Greenwood's best early screen performances -- Hermann Buhl in The Climb. Filmed on location in Nova Scotia, the exquisite beauty of the setting is pefectly complemented by Mark Snow's lush score.

Available on video and repeated occassionally on The Disney Channel and other pay stations.

Walt Disney Productions, c. 1990.
