Indeed, after meeting [Deepa Mehta] for the first time at the Toronto film fest,
actor Bruce Greenwood came away with a deal to star in Mehta's next film
and an affectionate impression of the filmmaker. "She's as mad as a hatter!"
he tells The Sun. Greenwood will star in The Republic Of Love, a romantic story due to start filming in Toronto next month. The day I'm sitting down to lunch, Mehta
is dressed in a traditional Indian top, for some last-minute head-and-shoulder
photos for her movie publicity, and in rugged blue jeans, ready to scout
locations for The Republic Of Love.

Mehta is following it up with what she calls "my white film." Shooting starts next month on The Republic of Love, a romantic comedy based on the 1992 Carol Shields novel. It stars Bruce Greenwood and Amelia Fox (The Pianist) in a story that Mehta characterizes as "an exploration of love, the different aspects of love and the nature of love. I think it's a love story meant for the 21st century. A real departure from romantic comedies as we know them from Hollywood. It's an adult love story, for one thing. It's not about teenagers."
