The Characters / The Cast
DEEPA MEHTA:
We had a wonderful cast who were all enthusiastic about this. It was a labor of love. So working with the actors was easy, a pleasure.
The character of Tom: "One of the reasons I was so intrigued by this was Tom's character - he is an extremely vulnerable, warm accessible and charming man. To shoot a vulnerable man (a real rarity) was great, as he's such a totally romantic character."
"It was Bruce's first romantic lead, as he reminded me...I saw THIRTEEN DAYS and thought he was great. Then I saw a still photo of him and he looked handsome and cocky, and I thought, "Yes!"
BRUCE GREENWOOD was drawn to play the character of Tom because:
"Tom's an innocent, optimistic guy. He's been around the block and yet he's naïve in terms of love, as he believes in the fable of love. I usually get to play guys with something up their sleeves, but here's a guy who wears his heart on his! I play so many bad guys and I don't want to do that all the time, plus it was a chance to do something in Canada, which was attractive... A reason I also wanted to do this was that it's a fable, a very beautiful fable."
On playing a good guy, BRUCE GREENWOOD says "It's trickier (playing good guys) in some ways. The decisions Tom makes are impulsive, and he has no agenda, so you have to be relaxed in a different way when you are playing someone with one.
