(1986-1988 television series on NBC)
A television series with quality and quirky quaintness; Bruce Greenwood was
added to the cast in its 5th season and stayed til it was cancelled two
years later. He played Dr. Seth Griffin, the manipulative intern whose first
season was spent bedding Dr. Westphall's daughter, Lizzie, and getting other
troublesome interns fired. Originally signed as a guest artist, the producers added him as a regular cast member even before his first episode aired. The writers also warmed to him over the season and his
character developed unexpected areas of sensitivity, including gifted
professional skills, a gentle way with children and a probably sincere love
story with a slightly older doctor. During his second season Seth finds
redemption after pricking himself with an AIDS infected needle. St.
Elsewhere was Greenwood's first celebrity assignment and the major breakthrough of
his early career. He was brought in after Mark Harmon left the show as the
necessary heart throb and even though the show had troublesome ratings and
constant cancellation worries it was a period of high profile and
significant professional satisfaction for him. Considered the greatest
television drama series ever by many astute critics, it was a glorious
personal experience as well, a chance to create a complex character in
fascinating stories opposite first rate actors.
A few episodes are available on video, but none with his storyline. Repeated occassionally in syndication and currently available on the cable station TV Land.
