(2002 independent film)
One of Bruce Greenwood's more unique projects, he plays Madonna's wealthy husband in an updated remake of the Lena Wertmüller 1974 classic Swept Away, helmed by her real-life husband Guy Ritchie. The story concerns a spoiled rich couple who are vacationing aboard a hired yacht with friends. The haughty and demanding wife becomes stranded on an island with the boat's fisherman, and totally unimpressed with her superior attitude, he gives her a boorish lesson in humility that leads into a violently passionate affair. When they return to civilization she is reunited with her husband, who suspects their affair but arranges for her to never see the fisherman again. Adriano Giannini (whose father Giancarlo created the original role) co-stars as the common fisherman while Jeanne Tripplehorn, Elizabeth Banks and David Thornton play some of the couple's snooty friends.
Ritchie, who had some success with two previous films - Snatch and Love, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, renamed the movie Love, Sex, Drugs & Money shortly after filming began on October 1st, 2001 in Malta, but test audiences convinced producers to go back to the original title. The ending was greatly re-thought and differs significantly from the first version, offering a sober finality to an otherwise light comedy, but providing Greenwood with some of his best footage. It was shot in Sardinia a month after principal filming had been completed. There were several reports that Friends star Jennifer Aniston shot a cameo for the film, but if so, it was cut from the released product. The feature was purchased by Sony and opened in a limited run on October 11th, 2002. Lukewarm reviews for Madonna in the United States lead to a direct-to-video in The United Kingdom and Canada.
