A Gregg Gig with Bruce as Back-up

from Pamela McKay:

On Saturday, August 11, a group of Bruce Greenwood fans saw Gregg Lee Henry perform at Genghis Cohen for the second time, but this time he had two special back-up singers: actors Bruce Greenwood and John Lathan. The performance was packed to the rafters with enthusiastic music-lovers. There was tremendous excitement in the air as Gregg lit into his opening numbers. Bruce was in the audience, too, enjoying the performance more than anybody -- tapping to the music, clapping and whistling in response to each song and every joke.

Four songs in, Gregg introduced his two friends and as they set up to work he dryly commented: "The Men in Black". Two of the songs on the current CD were done with Bruce and John as back-up, then Gregg did two songs apiece with each of his guest singers. The highlight of the evening was a new piece for Gregg and Bruce (whom Gregg introduced as "El Presidente") called "Listening to Volare" with a "Volare" refrain that brought an impish grin to Bruce's face each time he delivered it and each time roused the audience into an ever louder response. As he left the stage for the last time, Bruce bounced past Gregg and planted an affectionate kiss on the top of his friend's head. It was clear how happy he was for his talented buddy's success. And in the end the evening did belong to Gregg. "Forced" to perform two encores, one included a rip-roaring rendition of "Je suis Americain" delivered as wryly as only Gregg can do it. A fabulous evening for three talented actor/singers with a special nod to the genius of composer/actor/singer/performer Gregg Lee Henry.
