Gregg Henry provided us all with a special Christmas present when he announced his latest gig would be held in early December. This show did not include Bruce Greenwood, who was busy filming Racing Stripes in South Africa, but it did include John Lathan and Gregg's usual entertaining yet rye outlook on life.
The evening was a more thoughtful night that usual - that is, Gregg seemed in a romantic or blues mood and concentrated more on his love songs - both about love deeply felt or love gone astray. My favorite was "That Song Again" that seemed to be reflecting back on a life gone wrong for a beauty queen. I also liked the trilly background and tender resignation of "Then and There." Gregg also paid a small tribute to Bruce in his introduction of his newest hit - "The Back of Your Hand," since it was Bruce who brought Gregg and Dwight Yoakam together.
Of course, John Lathan brought the house down once again with his wild interpretations of the Jimmy Swaggert tune "I want my God TV!", and even better, his brilliant staccato beats on "We Come Closer," but on the whole this was Gregg's evening - one that celebrated his genuine honesty as a performer and composer.
